WHY SUPPORT SELFRIDGE ANG BASE?

SUPPORTING SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE

Why It's Important to support Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

First and foremost, we believe it is our duty to support the brave men and women in our armed forces who risk their lives so that all of us in the United States may live free. Currently, Selfridge Air National Guard Base is the last active base in the state of Michigan. Selfridge ANG Base is also the only base in the United States that is uniquely positioned to efficiently and effectively host all branches of the U.S. military, the Department of Homeland Security, and over 40 tenants within the Department of Defense. The purpose of the Selfridge Base Community Council (BCC) is to work closely with each military tenant on Selfridge and assist or coordinate the specific needs of family members of soldiers who are in need. An example being a Coast Guardsman who was injured and unable to live in her home. The Council helped get her house ready for sale while the sailor focused on her health.

Secondly, our long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship has an estimated $850 million economic impact on our local economy of southeastern Michigan. This means both the greater Detroit area and the base must rely on each other for economic growth and well being. From time to time, the Council will assist with special requests by military personnel for nonessential equipment to improve their welfare on base. The Base, as well as Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) in Warren, MI, provides thousands of jobs and promotes the continued economic growth of businesses in their respective areas.

Finally, we feel strongly in keeping the base operational and defending Selfridge ANG Base from Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) closings. The Selfridge BCC maintains strong ties with local, state, and federal government entities and ensures that members of Selfridge Air National Guard Base are addressed. The Council was a part of a coalition during the last military BRAC of 2005 to save Selfridge from being closed. With the federal government's Sequestration Act of 2013, there are constant threats to weaken and diminish Selfridge ANG Base. Some recent actions in Washington to remove the civil engineers could threaten to close the base. The Council is assisting in stopping this back door BRAC.
